Book list of Service Design Thinking from HBXer Mike Oren

This is Service Design Thinking: Basics, Tools, Cases

HBXer–Mike Oren’s Recommendation:

  • It was one of the most holistic but more academic.

Change by Design: How Design Thinking Transforms Organizations and Inspires Innovation

Author: Tim Brown

Publisher: HarperBusiness (September 29, 2009)

HBXer–Mike Oren’s Recommendation:

  • Change by Design I believe was written by the folks at IDEO (Jingning Ao: Yes! The author Tim Brown is the CEO and President of IDEO) and is one of the more accessible ones. These are mostly focused on physical services and I augmented it when teaching with some paper of SaaS service design work (I’d need to look those up).

Thinking in Systems: A Primer

Author: Donella H. Meadows

Publisher: Chelsea Green Publishing (December 3, 2008)

HBXer–Mike Oren’s Recommendation:

  • I also highly recommend Thinking in Systems (I actually argue systems thinking is more important than design thinking in the new data heavy tech world) and The Answer is Obvious* Once You Know the Answer. Also Thinking Fast, Thinking Slow.

Design-Thinking books recommended by HBX-Managing Your Career Development

At HBX-Managing Your Career Development session 3 (May 30, 2017), HBX Professor Ariel Stern recommended 5 design-thinking books:

  • I wanted to share a few book ideas for folks who are interested in reading more about Design Thinking and its applications. These are not listed in any particular order. Rather, each book considers the principles of Design Thinking in a different way (and/or for a different purpose). I’d encourage you to read through the descriptions of these books and check out any that you think would be interesting to you moving forward!
