Carrying the Fire: An Astronaut’s Journeys

Carrying the Fire: An Astronaut’s Journeys

Author: Michael Collins

Publisher: Farrar, Straus & Giroux Inc; Anniversary edition edition (7 July 2009)

HBXer–Jim Dubela’s Comments:

  • Its old, but good. Carrying the Fire by Michael Collins. It’s a first hand account of his journey from astronaut selection to Apollo 11 command module pilot. Older book, a little technical.

Riding Rockets: The Outrageous Tales of a Space Shuttle Astronaut

Riding Rockets: The Outrageous Tales of a Space Shuttle Astronaut

Author: Astronaut Mike Mullane

Publisher: Scribner; Reprint edition (February 6, 2007)

HBXers’ Comments:

  • Patrick Mullane: It is a very funny book …
  • Jim Dubela: Great story–makes you feel like you’re aboard the shuttle! A truth about aviation: make sure you’re clued-in to the “right answer.” No square pegs, please!
  • Jim Dubela: I loaned mine out and it made the rounds among the pilots at my base. Finally got it back–all dog-eared!
  • Prasoon Tripathi: Wow! I want to read it too!
  • Radhika Bhatia: I was looking for something like this to read!
  • Jingning Ao: Just finished the first chapter! Hahaha I cannot stop laughing. For example: “I was sure I had scored some points. Could there have been a better answer to convey the message that my family came first, that I had my priorities right? In reality I would have sold my wife and children into slavery for a ride into space. I thought it best not to mention that fact.”
  • Nguyen T Hong Phuc: He is still understating. I am sure he would have sold his parents and siblings too.
  •         Radhika Bhatia: Riding Rockets starts today!! (May 31 at 5:03 pm)
  •         ‎Jim Dubela: You’ll feel like you’re strapped in for the launch. Excellent read!
  • Rafael Rosales: Haha so I bought the book today via amazon and got a the first four chapters. I am only in page three and have already laughed three times!! Just read this part and laughed so hard!! I love Patrick Mullane how your dad has written this book in an honest and truthful manner! It is very refreshing. I had a very hard day today and reading this first part has helped me destress! Please pass on this message to your old man. Tell him he has a fan from El Salvador.
  • Rafael Rosales: So I also did the counting backwards by seven and failed at the 50’s. Hahaha got ahead a little bit more. Did it second time with less pressure and performed better.
  • Rafael Rosales: I would love to meet him in person and tell him that he has become one of my favorite authors!
